The Everyday Essential We Often Overlook

Sitting just 1.5° north of the equator, Singapore endures intense UV exposure year-round. The National Environment Agency frequently reports UV Index readings of 11 or higher, which fall into the "extreme" category.

At this level, unprotected skin can suffer burns in minutes, while long-term exposure accelerates skin aging, causes eye damage, and raises the risk of skin cancer.

And yet, most of us go about our day without giving UV protection a second thought.

The Sun Is Strong — But Our Habits Are Weak

A landmark NUS–National Skin Centre study surveyed 2,300 adults across Singapore in 2020. The findings were clear:More than half of Singaporeans take no sun protection measures at all. No hats. No UPF clothing. Sometimes not even sunscreen. For a country that’s sunny all year, that’s a surprising and serious gap in everyday health habits.

BE SUNSMART: FASHION MEETS FUNCTION

•  According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, sun-protective clothing offers the most effective defense    against the sun. It creates a reliable barrier that shields your skin far better than other methods. Sun hats, in particular, are essential for safeguarding your face, scalp, and neck.
•  Sunscreen helps, but the best protection comes from what you wear. That's where SunSmart comes in.
•  Our UPF 50+ apparel is crafted in Singapore to tackle the intense tropical sun. The fabrics block over 98% of UVA and UVB rays, providing an invisible shield for everyday exposure—all while feeling lightweight, breathable, and stylish.
•  For context, a plain white cotton T-shirt typically offers just UPF 5, roughly equivalent to SPF 5 sunscreen. That's barely any protection at all.
•  Think of SunSmart clothing as effortless style with built-in sun defense-perfect for a park strol, a tennis match, or any outdoor adventure.

The Overlooked Daily Essential

SunSmart was founded by fashion industry veteran Ada Rose G., who decided to call Singapore home in 2021 after 30+ years in the fashion industry across Hong Kong, China and Southeast Asia. Shortly after leading the supply of 8.78 milion Temasek masks during the pandemic, Ada came across research revealing Singapore’s slow awareness of sun safety, despite the region’s  intense UV exposure.

She also discovered that Singaporean women spend an average of S$270 amonth on beauty and wellness, yet sun-protective clothing - the first line of defence against UV damage - is often overlooked.

Drawing from her fashion expertise, Ada identified a clear gap: sun-safe apparel that is both stylish and functional. In markets like Japan, Korea, China, and Hong Kong, sun-protection wear is a fashion staple, but yet to gain traction in Singapore.

"lt puzzled me that despite Singapore’s constant sun exposure, many still rely only on skincare instead of clothing for protection," Ada says. "Clothing is the most effective shield - and we can make it fashionable."

This vision gave rise to SunSmart, Singapore’s home-grown sun-safe brand for the modern lifestyle.

Proudly Singaporean, Regionally Inspired

Customers responded enthusiastically to SunSmart’s debut collection of jackets, masks, and sleeves. With 30 years of fashion retail experience, Ada saw strong demand for a complete sun-safe wardrobe - hats to pants - in sleek Athleisure Chic styles that mix and match seamlessly.

Singapore is a culturally diverse nation, encompassing a spectrum of fashion tastes and body morphologies. SunSmart caters to this diversity by providing collections of apparels and accessories specifically crafted to complement the varied body types of Singaporeans and discerning customers in the region.

Singapore’s diversity of cultures and body types inspired SunSmart’s tailored approach. Instead of one size fits all, we design with Slim Fit, Smart Fit, and Relaxed Fit silhouettes, using 3-D tailoring techniques to flatter different shapes while ensuring all-day comfort.

"Today’s consumers want sun protection, style, fit, and function. We make sure our apparel not only protects but also makes people look and feel good,"  Ada emphasizes.
